Harajuku
HARAJUKU was founded in the eighties as a clubwear line in New York City by JoEllen Stooks, who at the time, was store manager of the legendary Unique Clothing Warehouse in the East Village. After striking out on her own, she opened a seasonal retail store on Martha’s Vineyard, where the line evolved into mostly swimwear. After a brief stint with a store in Miami’s South Beach, and three years on Melrose in Los Angeles, the business has moved online- retail and wholesale.
JoEllen had no formal design training, but has been sewing practically since birth. Her design philosophy is that Simple Is Good and comfort is key. Her suits are shaped without wires and pads, and the elastic in the bottoms is cut more forgivingly to avoid pinching. Everything is hand-made by her in her Los Angeles studio. The emphasis is on unique prints, sophisticated solids, and tons of black. No bling, no hardware, no frou-frou. Just a well-cut suit you’ll feel comfortable in, and you won’t see it on a hundred other women on the beach!
